As if there were any doubt that Phil Collins and the rest of Genesis did mountains of blow in the 80s, “Just a Job to Do” confirms it. How else do you explain a (catchy!) song that, rather inexplicably, spins a tale about a private investigator in hot pursuit? Apparently ABC got inspiration from the song, because it was the theme for a short-lived detective drama on the network called The Insiders, the plot of which sounds similar to Miami Vice.

At any rate, this song gets me going. Basically it makes me feel like goddam Magnum P.I., and anything that channels Tom Selleck is okay in my book.

Hm. I guess Usher’s new aesthetic is some mix between post-dubstep and ethereal r&b. Thanks in large part to Diplo who produced the staccato track, “Climax” sounds like a sexy minimalist dream— with hints of SBTRKT and How to Dress Well, it’s hard to believe how far he’s evolved from “Nice & Slow,” the song that not-so-subtly told us how Usher could “freak you right.” Usher 2012 sheds his bravado and gets deconstructed to something haunting yet simply beautiful.

Speaking of bluegrass. For those that may not know, bluegrass just lost an important figure, banjoist Earl Scruggs. Scruggs, with his three-finger picking style, along with Lester Flatt and Bill Monroe pretty much invented the genre as we know it today.

His song with Lester Flatt, Foggy Mountain Breakdown, is considered one of the greatest instrumentals ever recorded, and I’m inclined to agree.

this wouldn’t be out of place on Cowboy Bebop. noir-style light and shadow, with smoke from a cigarette lazily flowing upward at the beginning, and then it crescendos into some sort of epic chase/fight scene.

and i love how those glitch sounds at the start are like a brush on the hi-hat.
